When you register your domain the domain typically requires 4 contacts that will be linked to your domain:
- Registrant Contact
- Administrative Contact
- Technical Contact
- Billing Contact
The last 3 are typically set to your ISP/Hosting provider to deal with technical and billing issues.
The first contact (Registrant) HAS to be the owner of the domain (for co.za domains). The central registry that manages co.za domains (ZACR) specifically requires that this be done. This allows the owner of the domain to transfer their domain away from ISP\Hosting providers when they want to change providers.
So when you engage with a new provider make sure to confirm the above (especially with the mom and pop shops). If it is not done and you have issues transferring your domain you can contact ZACR and submit a complaint. ( https://www.registry.net.za/ )
